Flexible packaging for chocolate, pralines, and confectionery products.

The Challenges of Chocolate Packaging

Chocolate packaging presents several technical challenges related both to the delicacy of the product and to the need to preserve its organoleptic and structural characteristics:

  • Airtightness and Protection (Barrier): Chocolate is extremely sensitive to oxygen, moisture, and external odors, which can cause it to become rancid or alter its flavor.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Chocolate is prone to melting or developing “fat bloom” when exposed to sudden temperature changes.
  • Product Fragility: Chocolate bars and candies are fragile and can break easily. Packaging must be structurally strong to prevent mechanical damage.
  • Sustainability: eco-friendly packaging that still maintains the high barrier performance required for chocolate.

To address these challenges, we have developed customized solutions over the years tailored to specific needs (pralines, cremini, gianduiotti, eggs, etc.), always in compliance with current PPWR–MOSH–MOAH regulations.

Flexible Packaging for Chocolate

Overstrip Boule

This is the ideal packaging solution for high-quality filled pralines (Boule).

Printing: 6/8-color IN-LINE ROTOGRAVURE.

The structure consists of biaxially oriented polypropylene laminated with food-grade wax to a strip of aluminum positioned centrally within the overall wrapper.

The aluminum serves a dual purpose: it provides a complete barrier against light (essential for high-quality chocolate-based products) and forms the seal by twisting on both sides of the praline using the so-called “double bow” method.

This rather complex process requires a wax-lamination system, which only about 10 companies in Italy currently possess.

Ovetto Aluminum

Aluminum typically 12 microns thick

Printing: EXTERNAL ROTOGRAVURE with protective varnish

Twist

TWISTABLE or TWIST-ABLE material is generally made of PET (polyester)

It is used for all so-called “double-bow” packaging for candies, confetti, and medium-to-low-quality chocolate pralines.
